Sunday, January 29, 2007, by a unanimous vote of all present at the meeting, adopted a Statement of Conscience regarding environmental quality issues, particularly mentioning opposition to the fast-tracking of the proposed coal-fired power plants, which TXU is proposing building throughout Texas. Here is the full text of that statement, which will be distributed to various news outlets and other churches both in our area and throughout the state: STATEMENT OF CONSCIENCE TXU and other companies have proposed building multiple pulverized coal-fired power plants in the State of Texas. The members of Red River Unitarian Universalist Church believe that proposal is fatally flawed and should not be given final approval. The members of Red River Unitarian Universalist Church also believe that the fast-track process for approval of these plants by the State of Texas is morally wrong. Sufficient time for input from local communities has not been allowed, and no independent environmental study has been conducted. Furthermore, the members of Red River Unitarian Universalist Church believe that the State of Texas must develop a comprehensive energy plan. This should include incentives for energy conservation, development of energy from renewable sources, and research on achieving a sustainable lifestyle with emphasis on the phasing out of reliance on fossil fuels. Red River Unitarian Universalist Church urges its members to join with other concerned citizens in urging the Texas Legislature to ban construction of any pulverized coal plants and to support responsible and viable efforts directed toward securing a healthy, clean and sustainable environment.
